Identifying Cactus Types

Cacti vary in size and shape. Some grow only about an inch in diameter when fully mature. Some breeds grow super tall, with the largest going up to sixty feet in height. Many cactus species are distributed around the world. Many are found in Australia, Africa, and Mediterranean countries.

Understanding the global distribution of these plants can help assist in basic cactus identification. Below are some common types that will help in classifying the type of cactus we have at home.

Prickly Pear Cactus

When someone mentions cactus, the prickly pear is often the type of plant that would first come into mind. The prickly pear is a great addition to anyone’s collection as they are easy to care for, are not completely covered in spikes, and, most importantly, bloom beautiful flowers that eventually turn into edible fruit. It is believed that the prickly pear cactus offers numerous health benefits, such as reducing bad cholesterol and amping up one’s good cholesterol levels.

Ball Cactus

These types of cacti all share many common traits, notably their small, round shapes and bodies covered in yellow or white spines. When cared for and provided with suitable conditions, the ball cactus can produce bright flowers on top of its body. These flowers usually come in shades of pink, yellow, red, and white. Most home gardeners seek to grow their ball cacti where flowers bloom atop their bulbs, albeit difficult without a lot of care. Despite that, these plants are usually recommended for beginners or individuals looking to have a cactus at home as they do not require extremely high temperatures compared to other species.

Columnar Cactus

Columnar cacti are probably the easiest to identify in this list as there are only a few that fall under this category. These cacti usually grow very tall and are not ideal for indoor cultivation. With that said, it does take time for columnar cacti to reach heights where indoor conditions become unsuitable. You will likely get a few years of indoor growth out of this type of cactus, but be prepared to transplant them outdoors or give them away when the time comes. A common example of a columnar cactus is the Saguaro.

Barrel Cactus

When we think of cacti, the barrel cactus hosts one of the more popular types of potted cactus you will encounter. They are shaped more like a cylinder than a ball or tower. Barrel cacti are known to produce flowers that bloom on top of them that will eventually develop into fruit. However, unlike the prickly pear cactus, the fruit of barrel cacti is not edible. Due to over harvesting of this plant for the production of cactus candy, barrel cacti have been labeled as endangered.

Hedgehog Cactus

Hedgehog cacti grow in small groups with several stems. They may grow tons of stems in one group, depending on the size of the plant. This type of cactus reaches about a foot in length, making it perfect for indoors. However, it does have a lot of spines. Remember that this type of cactus needs sunlight and proper drainage in order for it to flourish. If you plan on helping it bloom flowers, you need to recreate environmental conditions of a rainy spring by maintaining the right temperature and watering your plant in just the right amount.

Pincushion Cactus

A go-to cactus when decorating your home, the pincushion cactus is a popular choice in home decoration-themed stores and even your local department stores. This plant earned its name from its appearance, having small spines that look like needles stuck in a pincushion. This species of cactus stays fairly small throughout its life. It is a great choice for people interested in indoor plant cultivation as it requires minimal space and is easy to care for.

Importance of Cacti

Cacti are very versatile plants that offer multiple benefits in your home. They can serve as ornamental pieces, adding vibrancy to dull areas of the house. Some cactus species are even edible, producing fruits rich in vitamins and minerals for good health. Just like many other plants, they also improve air quality, helping you breathe better within your living space.

Caring for cacti, or plants in general, can be a fulfilling hobby. Having them at home can help relieve stress and enhance your overall happiness. Witnessing the growth and blooming of a well cared for cactus provides you a sense of accomplishment and is genuinely rewarding.

Choosing the Right Cactus Type for You

Choosing the right cactus depends on a variety of factors including personal preference, the time you can dedicate to care for your cactus, and the specific environment in which the cactus will thrive. Cacti come in a vast range of shapes, sizes, and textures, each with their own unique personality. Despite their diversity, the way cacti are cared for generally follows similar principles.

You have to take into account the presence of pets or young children in your home that might be at risk of being pricked by cactus spines. In situations where safety is a concern, getting a cactus with flat or no spines, like the Christmas cactus, which lacks typical cactus spikes altogether.

If you have limited space in your home, small and low-maintenance cacti like the pincushion cactus and hedgehog cactus are ideal, as they require minimal care and space. If you have outdoor space and prefer larger cacti, columnar cacti like the saguaro are a good choice as they can grow quite tall and flourish outdoors.
